The short answer
Most cooktop problems, including failed ignition, constant clicking, weak flames and dead induction zones, come from a single component and can be repaired without replacing the unit. A technician tests the ignition, gas, electrical and control systems to find the fault. Then you get a clear recommendation on whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
A cooktop that won't light, clicks nonstop, or heats one pan unevenly makes the whole kitchen harder to use. Viking Appliance Services repairs built-in gas, electric and induction cooktops and professional-style rangetops in homes across Los Angeles and nearby cities. We work mainly on Viking equipment, and we also service Wolf and Thermador cooktops, plus the Sub-Zero refrigeration they're often installed alongside. We are an independent repair company, not affiliated with any of these brands. Our goal is to find the actual fault, explain it plainly, and help you decide whether repair makes sense for your unit.
Issues we fix
Cooktop trouble usually shows up in one of a few ways. If you can tell us what you're seeing, and whether it affects one burner or all of them, we can narrow down the likely cause before we arrive.
- Burners that won't ignite, or light only after several tries
- Igniters that keep clicking after the flame is lit, or click when the knob is off
- Weak, yellow, uneven or lifting flames
- Burners that go out on low or simmer settings
- Uneven heat across a pan, or a zone that runs hotter or cooler than its setting
- Electric elements that stay dark or stay on high
- Induction zones that won't detect a pan, shut off mid-cook, or show error codes
- Unresponsive touch controls, flickering displays or stuck knobs
- A gas smell near the cooktop (shut off the gas supply, leave the house, and call your gas utility first)

What our technician checks on a built-in or professional-style cooktop
We start by confirming the complaint with the burners running whenever it's safe to do so. On gas units, the technician inspects the igniters, spark module, switches at each valve, burner heads and caps, and the ports where flame forms. Moisture from a boil-over or cleaning spray often causes constant clicking. Cracked igniters and worn switches are also common. We check gas pressure and the regulator, and we confirm the burners are set up for the right fuel, natural gas or propane.
On electric and induction cooktops, we test the elements or induction coils, power boards, control boards, cooling fans and temperature sensors, and we check that the circuit supplies the voltage the unit needs. Induction cooktops depend on airflow underneath, so we look at how the unit is vented inside the cabinet. We also check that the cooktop is level and properly secured, because a unit that has shifted in its cutout can cause uneven heat and loose connections.
How Viking, Sub-Zero, Wolf and Thermador cooktops differ
Viking gas cooktops and rangetops are built around high-output sealed burners, and their spark ignition systems get heavy use. Igniters, spark modules and the switches behind the knobs are frequent repair points, especially after spills reach the burner base. Viking induction and electric models more often come to us for control or element problems.
Sub-Zero makes refrigeration, not cooktops. Its sister brand, Wolf, makes the cooking equipment. Many Los Angeles kitchens pair a Sub-Zero refrigerator with a Wolf cooktop or rangetop, and we can look at both on the same visit. Wolf gas units use dual-stacked burners designed for both high heat and low simmer. When the simmer flame drops out or the burner ignites unevenly, the cause is usually a burner component, the valve, or the igniter. Wolf induction and electric models can show control and sensor faults.
Thermador gas cooktops use star-shaped burners with a low-simmer feature. Clogged burner ports and ignition problems tend to show up as uneven flame or burners that won't hold low heat. Thermador induction models, including the larger flexible-zone surfaces, rely on several electronic boards and cooling fans. Those components are where we usually find the fault.

Repair or replace a high-end cooktop?
Repair is usually the sensible choice on a premium cooktop. These units are built to be serviced, and most failures involve a single replaceable part such as an igniter, switch, valve, element or board. Replacement also costs more than the price of the new unit. A different model may not fit your existing cutout, which can mean altering stone countertops or cabinetry.
Replacement is worth discussing when the cooktop body, glass or burner box has major damage. It also makes sense when key parts are discontinued or several systems are failing together, or when you already want to change fuel type or layout. We'll tell you what we found and which parts are available, so you can make the call with real information.
What affects the cost of cooktop repair
Three things drive the cost: the fault, the parts and the access. A wet igniter that needs cleaning and drying is a very different job from a failed induction power board. Parts for professional-style and induction units vary widely, and some must be ordered for your specific model. Access matters too. Cooktops set into stone counters, islands or custom cabinetry may need to be lifted or reached from below, which takes more time. We explain the expected scope after diagnosis, before any repair work starts.
How a visit works
When you contact us, have the brand, the model and serial number if you can find them, and a short description of the problem ready. On many cooktops the label is under a burner grate or drip tray, or on the underside of the unit. That information helps us bring the right parts and tools.
At the visit, the technician confirms the symptom, tests the relevant systems, and explains the cause and your options. If the needed part is on hand and you approve the work, we can often finish the repair that day. If a part has to be ordered, we schedule a return visit to install it. Before leaving, we test every burner or zone we worked on and make sure the cooktop is secured and safe to use.
