The short answer

Most range hood problems, such as weak suction, a noisy or dead blower, failed lights, or unresponsive controls, come from a specific part like the motor, capacitor, switch, control board, or ductwork, and can usually be repaired. A technician tests the hood, the blower, and the duct path to find the cause before recommending a repair or replacement.

A range hood is easy to ignore until it stops pulling smoke, starts rattling, or won't turn on at all. In a kitchen with a professional-style range or cooktop, a working hood is what keeps heat, grease, and cooking odors from settling into your cabinets and ceiling. Viking Appliance Services repairs range hoods in homes across Los Angeles and nearby cities. We work in kitchens built around Viking, Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Thermador appliances, including wall-mount chimney hoods, island hoods, custom hood liners and inserts, and downdraft systems. We are an independent repair company and are not affiliated with any appliance brand. Our goal is to find the actual fault and give you a clear choice between repairing and replacing.

Issues we fix

Range hood problems usually show up in one of three ways: the hood doesn't move enough air, it makes noise it didn't make before, or part of it stops responding. These are the symptoms homeowners call us about most often:

  • Blower won't turn on, or hums without spinning
  • Fan runs on only one speed, or won't shut off
  • Weak suction, with smoke and steam drifting past the hood
  • Rattling, grinding, squealing, or vibrating during operation
  • Lights out or flickering, including after a bulb change
  • Touch controls or push buttons that don't respond
  • Grease dripping from the hood or the filters
  • Downdraft vent that won't rise, lower, or stay up
  • Automatic or heat-sensing fan features that turn on unexpectedly or don't turn on at all
  • Remote or inline blower that has gone quiet

What our technician checks

Built-in and professional-style hoods are more involved than a basic under-cabinet unit. Many use high-capacity blowers, and some put the blower in the attic, in the duct run, or on the roof instead of inside the hood. We start by confirming the symptom with you, then trace the problem from the controls back to the blower and duct.

On a typical visit, the technician tests power at the hood and checks the controls, switches, and wiring harness. On hoods that have them, we check the control board. We inspect the blower motor, the fan wheel, and the motor capacitor, since a weak capacitor is a common reason a motor hums but won't start. We look at the baffle or mesh filters for heavy grease buildup and check the light sockets and transformer.

Airflow problems are not always inside the hood. A stuck or missing backdraft damper, a crushed or undersized duct, or a blocked exterior cap can make a healthy blower seem weak. We check those too, as far as we can reach them, and we'll tell you if the issue sits in ductwork or roof access that needs other trades.

How Viking, Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Thermador kitchens differ

Viking makes professional-style wall and island hoods as well as ventilation inserts for custom hoods. Many use powerful blowers and simple mechanical or push-button controls. When these hoods have problems, the cause is usually wear on the blower motor, failed switches, or grease-loaded filters that choke airflow. Their straightforward design often makes diagnosis direct.

Sub-Zero is a refrigeration brand and doesn't make hoods itself. Kitchens with Sub-Zero refrigerators are very often paired with Wolf ranges, cooktops, and ventilation, so we see a lot of Wolf hoods in those homes.

Wolf ventilation includes pro wall hoods, island hoods, hood liners, and downdraft units, sometimes with remote blowers. Downdraft models add lift motors, tracks, and position switches, so a vent that won't rise is a different repair from a fan that won't spin. Remote blowers need us to locate and reach the blower wherever it was installed.

Thermador hoods and downdrafts often use electronic controls, and some models have automatic fan features. When these act up, the cause may be a sensor, control board, or wiring problem instead of the motor itself.

Repair or replace a high-end range hood?

Repair is usually the right call for a premium hood. The housing, liner, and stainless shell rarely wear out, and a custom hood is often built into cabinetry or a plaster surround that would be expensive and disruptive to change. Motors, capacitors, switches, lights, and control boards are replaceable parts.

Replacement makes more sense when parts for an older model are no longer available, when the housing is badly corroded or damaged, or when the hood was undersized for your cooktop from the start and has never cleared smoke well. If you're remodeling or upgrading to a larger range, that's also a good time to reconsider ventilation. We'll give you an honest read on which path fits your kitchen.

What affects the cost

We don't quote a repair before we know what's wrong, because the same symptom can have very different causes. These are the main factors:

  • The fault itself: a capacitor or light socket is a smaller job than a blower motor or control board
  • Parts: availability and the specific part your model needs
  • Access: hoods enclosed in custom cabinetry, wood or plaster surrounds, or tall ceilings take more time to open and reach
  • Remote or inline blowers located in attics, duct runs, or on the roof
  • Downdraft mechanisms, which add lift components to diagnose and repair

How a visit works

When you contact us, tell us the brand, the model number if you can find it (often on a label behind the filters), and what the hood is doing. That helps the technician arrive prepared. At your home, we diagnose the problem, explain what we found in plain terms, and go over your options before starting any work. If a part needs to be ordered, we'll schedule a return visit to install it, then test the hood on every speed and confirm the lights and controls work before we leave.

FAQ

Common questions

Why is my range hood running but not pulling smoke?

Common causes are grease-clogged filters, a stuck backdraft damper, a blocked or crushed duct, or a weakening blower motor. Clean the filters first. If that doesn't help, the duct or blower needs to be checked.

My hood fan hums but won't spin. What does that mean?

That often points to a failed motor capacitor or a seized motor. Turn the fan off so the motor doesn't overheat, and have it diagnosed.

Do you repair downdraft vents?

Yes. We work on downdraft systems, including ones that won't rise or lower, which usually involves the lift motor, track, or position switches.

Can you work on a hood built into custom cabinetry?

Yes. We're used to working on custom hood surrounds and liners. Access can add time, and we'll explain what's involved before opening anything.

Are you authorized by Viking, Wolf, or Thermador?

No. Viking Appliance Services is an independent repair company and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any appliance brand.
